You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by. (Job 11:16)
The Bible
A psychological disorder or a mental illness involves significant changes in a persons
thoughts, feelings, behaviour and personality patterns. These changes often lead to intense
distress, poor quality of life and impaired interpersonal, social and occupational functioning.
While the person bears the brunt of the psychological disorder directly, those around him or
her, especially family and friends also experience significant distress trying to understand,
pacify and encourage the person to lead a normal life again. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) describes more than 300 psychological and mental disorders. A significant variation exists in the nature, intensity, symptoms and duration of these disorders. Some conditions are mild or transitional, and the person manages to lead a meaningful existence despite all the struggle. Others are so severe
that the individual experiences a disintegration in the sense of self and daily life.
It is important to realize that having a mental illness does not imply that someone is weak,
evil or doomed. Psychological disorders can affect anyone regardless of their strength, age,
education, social-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs and
spiritual inclination.
If you or someone close to you is suffering from a psychological disorder, don't lose hope.
Although these conditions might appear to be scary at the outset, there are many medical,
psychiatric, psychological, psychotherapeutic, nutritional and alternative methods available to
heal them. Different treatment methods seem to work for different people based on the level
of their consciousness and the forces that they bring into play. Try to figure out a method that
works for you and enables you to bounce back to life.
However, if you are looking for a lasting cure along with a complete metamorphosis of your
being, then spirituality is a sure-fire approach. Mystical perspectives highlight that whatever
happens in our life, including mental illness, it is part of the Divine plan. The real purpose of
psychological disorders is to make you aware that you are disconnected from your soul and
are not living an integrated existence.
Once you connect to your soul, there will be an evolution of consciousness which will bring
down the force of eternal healing. This will enable you to overcome all disorders and
transform you into a new being. Most of us are not aware of this inherent potential and lack
faith in the Divine plan. We feel that we are hapless victims of a cruel destiny and allow
pessimism to rule us. During such times, we need an external guide to remind us who we
really are and what we need to do.
A spiritual counsellor is someone who can help you in becoming mindful of your own
inherent powers and the grace that surrounds you. The counsellor works with you closely and
sees to it that you develop faith, integrate different layers of your being and connect to your
soul. With the widening of consciousness, the grace pours down, and all psychological
disorders fade away. You rejoice in a state of complete physical, vital, mental and spiritual
well-being.
